| FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. How can a one-day seminar change a life time of bad communication habits? A. First, Thompson Communication Skills training is NOT a "seminar", where attendees simply take in the information on an intellectual basis. Our training is generally conducted in individual sessions or in small groups
Our programs are very "hands-on" involving ALL participants in numerous role-playing exercises. As a result, trainees assimilate the issues and methods on a visceral as well as intellectual basis. The process of change is begun and has a long term momentum of its own.
Q. Isn't communication training expensive? A. What is the price paid for a mispoken word to a customer or the cost of a misunderstanding? In the the work place, how much do poorly understood policies and procedures cost?
How much does re-doing work cost, in lost time and raw materials when instructions were not clear? In a crisis, what is the long-term price of a media mistake or other public misstatement? Today clear, credible and concise communication is a business necessity!
Q. Which is more important, the message or the messenger's "style?" A. Neither! However, studies show that HOW the messenger delivers information will determine whether it is heard, credible, remembered and or acted upon. The perceptual messages sent by the spokesperson may actually detract from the content, leaving it ignored, disbelieved and resulting in lack of action. The content and the perceptual messages must be in sync!
Q. What kind of follow-up is provided so that the lessons stick? A. Continued homework is given after each session. To reinforce lessons learned, follow up tip sheets are available to be forwarded by the trainee's supervisors. This reinforces the company's commitment to the program and to improved communication. Participants who trained together are encouraged to become a support group for the techniques, to "experiment and have fun" with the methods among themselves. But primarily, the trainee develops a new awareness about good communication.
Q. Which is best for presentations... notes or prepared text? A. It depends on the situation, the criticality of precise verbage, and available prep time. However, neither should give the impression that you are just reading words that somebody else wrote.....or that you are just "winging it" and have no direction to your talk. Thompson Communication Skills training teaches contemporary methods and presentation structures that make it easy to deliver persuasively from either notes or text...AND keep your audience oriented as to where the discussion is leading.
Q. Isn't Power Point great? I'm much less nervous with all eyes on the screen instead of me! A. You and the Wizard behind the curtain in the Kingdom of Oz. But Dorothy found him out! Remember, the slides are audio visual AIDS. They are NOT the presentation. It takes human conviction to sell ideas. Slides merely focus attention on the ideas. Strong presenters connect with the on screen data, and then give it "life" as they offer the information to the audience. The Thompson Communication technique fully integrates you and the audio visuals into ONE powerful show!
Q. What's the use in talking to the media? They distort the news just to sell papers! A. Perhaps some do! But most reporters just want a good attention holding story. The Thompson Method helps you level the playing field, to make it a "win-win" for both sides. With preparation, you get your message out and the reporter gets answers to questions.
Q. I've never liked public speaking. I get butterflies, quavering voice and all. How can you fix a life-long problem like that? A. Anyone can become an effective speaker, and it takes neither magic nor rocket science. That nervous energy can be channeled into productive presentation skills that work. Thompson's contemporary speaking techniques are practical, immediate confidence builders. They have been tested and proven by literally thousands of business leaders, government officials, celebrities and spokesmen of all sorts. And the good news is...they can be learned in a single session, and with just a bit of consistent practice, MASTERED for life! |
